Wanderers OSS began the year 2020 with great vigor and focus. The goal was clear, to improve on the exhilarating performance shown in 2019, and to win the 3rd division title. And then the pandemic struck cricket, just as it did the world. The thinking changed dramatically from playing 3 preseason matches, to whether if we would play any cricket at all in year. Those initial days were indeed filled with great uncertainty and adjustment for most of us.
By July thanks to some valiant effort by the medical profession, citizens and the government, things began looking up again. cricket started again under very strict safety protocols. It was a bizarre start to the season, but the club was happy just to be on the grass again and feel a bit normal. During all the upheaval, the board of wanderers focused on being productive and successfully completed the procurement of our club jersey in the colors of Oss. While we maybe not the get recognition from the Gemeente, in return, the club does feel a close bond with the town, as evident from our choice of colors.
Team 1 in Division 3A
Team 1 began the season with a disappointing away defeat against HTCECA from Eindhoven. The lack of preseason clearly showed in the way the players were rusty. But thankfully that result was just an aberration as the team finished joint second in the final table. As the season progressed we witnessed some outstanding performances . Notable among them Ishant Upadhyay cemented his place as key player, making a top score of 98 not out against Salland CC. He also claimed the most wickets in the division from wanderers. Pascal Schuurmans topped the batting charts with an amazing average of 36.75 scoring 147 runs in 7 matches.
Then there were the usual performers. Nicky Sjamaar showed a control and variation in his bowling that was never seen before. He also cemented his place as an opener, with a respectable haul of runs, and some vital performances. Tom Sjamaar, showed he has the innate Sjamaar batting acumen, if given the chance. Vikas, could not reach the high scores that seemed so easy for him last year, but he showed a level of consistency befitting his position as an opener. In addition in the first half of the season, he made a huge impact with his new found spin bowling. All in all there were too many good performers , for this report to cover. Shital, Luke, Anupam, Yogesh, Pavanesh, Dean, Siddharth, Navaraj with amazing captaincy all made great contributions. A special thanks to Vatsal for always filling in whenever the team was short.
Zami lives up to the billing, visiting some great clubs
While the seventh position in the table does not show favorably, Zami had some exciting matches. In one such match wanderers defeated Blomendaal CC in the final two balls. A close game indeed. Overall, ZAMI managed to keep its fun ethos alive. Results are expected to only get better as players get more experience, and new members join the side. On a special note Eric Van den Bogaart scored an astounding 180 runs in 5 innings. That is an average of 90.0!!!!!! Dean Van Rooyen score a respectable 105 runs and captured 5 wickets, making a key contribution. Captain marc chipped in with a great tally of 9 wickets. Steve Binns and Barend both returned a tally of 5+ wickets.
Season Close and looking ahead
The season was concluded with a nice family day out while respecting COVID regulations. A special lunch was provided by kit sponsor mount Everest, definitely earning more followers in the process. Thankfully the season wrapped up before the second wave hit, so now is the time to reflect, and prepare for the next season. There are some exciting developments in the pipeline. A revamped preseason in 2021, a coaching structure within the club, new members joining the ranks, improved facilities. There will be new challenges as well, but the club is as always resilient enough to find solutions and move forward. More about behind the scenes actions in the board, and the preparation for 2021 can be soon read in a follow up report on our website.
