Wanderers first triumph over Salland in 5 years

August 4 was the day of the much awaited home fixture against Salland cricket club in the division 3 pool D. Having been overwhelmed by Salland on their grass pitch earlier in the season, the Nepalese trio of Ishant, Anupam and Navaraj were raring to have another go on home turf. The game turned in to a perfect exhibition of contrasting human traits of irrationality and grit. With Salland, 2 players short, the duo of Tasal and Abhai “lange” adhin stepped up to the uncomfortable task of playing against wanderers.

Salland opened their innings with Tasal and the very experienced Sikkema. Wanderers bowled with lethal precision, as Salland was restricted to a run rate of about 2 for the first 11 overs. Tom and Navaraj bowled with great focus and hardly conceeded any runs. Ishant proved to be most effective with 3 wickets at an enviable economy of 2 runs per over. Appie chipped in with some classic spin bowling to frustrate salland and pick 2 valuable wickets. Salland collapsed to a paltry total of 80 runs in 24 overs. Captain Marc showed his guile with some very disciplined spin bowling and took the wicket of the best Salland batsmen, that resulted in a brilliant diving catch from Ishant.

With a modest target of 80, it seemed all but over for Salland. However this turned in to one of those tricky games, where batting frailties were exposed. Wanderers opened with in-form batsmen Vikas and Pascal. However both were dismissed cheaply. There was no reason to hit the panic button just yet. Jeroen and Anupam built a small yet steady partnership. Jeroen, exhibited some of the batting potential we often see from his father Eric. Anupam continued his improvement scoring 16 runs. However soon they too fell. Immediately after Tom and Appie Adhin both fell for ducks leaving wanderers at 39 for 6. Two new batsmen in Siddharth and Eric arrived on the pitch to salvage the innings. They together built another small partnership to get the wanderers to 62 runs, when both of them fell within a space of 6 runs to unlucky dismissals. With 12 runs to win and just 2 wickets remaining Ishant blasted 4 fours , to make it all seem so easy. Thus in essence achieving the first victory over Salland in 5 years. Yet another sign of resurgence from wanderers in this year of club records. Thanks in particular, to Caroline Sjamaar for her enthusiastic scoring and Mathijs, Ernst-Jan and Maarten for supporting wanderers with passion.
